Newtown Indian United Methodist Church was established by Samuel Checote, who sought to bring God's Word to his fellow Mvskoke. He was also one of the first ordained ministers of the Creek Nation, at a time when the Creeks had a prohibition against teaching and practicing Christianity, and, like Paul, was on the business end of a lash for doing so. The original church building was constructed in 1841 in what was then Indian Territory.
The current complex occupies seven acres. There is a church with a bell tower, a classroom building, a fellowship hall, and an open-air pavilion.
