"The Merchants' Bridge is a bridge in Narbonne, Occitanie, whose origins date back to Roman times. It crosses the Robine canal and has the distinction of being one of the few bridges still inhabited in France.

The Roman bridge crossed the Atax, the Aude, whose bed was diverted during the Middle Ages and which is today occupied by the Robine canal.

This Roman bridge is very well preserved but is nowadays difficult to see because its six or seven arches and access ramps are embedded in the surrounding buildings, serving as cellars for the houses which have been surmounting the bridge since medieval times and which have transformed the street pavement continues, no longer giving visibility to the watercourse.

The Canal de la Robine passing under the only arch still visible, is a remnant of the old bed of the Aude, the course of which changed during late antiquity and then in the Middle Ages. Following the construction of a lock downstream, the water level was raised by several meters, masking a little more the perception of the piles of the remaining arch.

The bridge is built between the ancient Roman city of Narbo Martius, on the left bank, and the old medieval town on the right bank. It follows the route of the ancient cardo maximus of the Roman city, formed by the Via Domitia. "

"Le pont des Marchands est un pont de Narbonne, en Occitanie, dont l'origine remonte à l'époque romaine. Il franchit le canal de la Robine et a la particularité d'être un des rares ponts encore habités de France.

Le pont romain franchissait l'Atax, l'Aude, dont le lit a été dévié durant le Moyen Âge et qui est aujourd'hui occupé par le canal de la Robine.

Ce pont romain est très bien conservé mais est de nos jours difficilement perceptible car ses six ou sept arches et rampes d’accès sont noyées dans le bâti environnant, servant de caves aux maisons qui surmontent le pont depuis l’époque médiévale et qui ont transformé la chaussée en rue continue, ne donnant plus de visibilité sur le cours d’eau.

Le Canal de la Robine passant sous l’unique arche encore visible, est un vestige de l’ancien lit de l’Aude, dont le parcours s’est modifié au cours de l’antiquité tardive puis au Moyen Âge. À la suite de l’édification d’une écluse en aval, le niveau de l’eau a été rehaussé de plusieurs mètres, masquant un peu plus la perception des piles de l’arche subsistante.

Le pont est construit entre l'ancienne cité romaine de Narbo Martius, sur la rive gauche, et l'ancien bourg médiéval de la rive droite. Il suit le tracé de l'ancien cardo maximus de la ville romaine, formé par la Via Domitia. "
