This verse from the book of Psalms from the Bible is on the cornerstone of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, located on the corner of Superior Avenue (Route 6) and East 41st Street in Cleveland, Ohio. The parish was founded in May of 1865, and construction on the current church building was begun in 1873. The cornerstone was laid by the Most Reverend Richard Gilmour, Bishop of Cleveland on August 15, 1873. The church was not consecrated until more than 30 years later, on December 10, 1904 by the Most Reverend Ignatius F. Horstmann, Bishop of Cleveland. On the cornerstone commemorating these events is the first verse of Psalm 126 in Latin: "Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum, in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam." The English translation from the Douay-Rheims version of the Bible is, "Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it." This verse is especially appropriate in the context of building a church to honor God.
