The Gawler Institute Committee was formed in 1857 and the Institute's building was constructed in 1870. The Institute is an Italianate style building with walls of bluestone rubble with stucco dressings. The cast iron balustrade at street level was cast from the first iron smelted in South Australia. The building is also known as the home of "Song of Australia"
