Essex House is a single storey building that has been ynonymous with the drapery, general merchandise and fashion business since the 1880's.
The left hand or southern side was constructed in the 1840's and used as 3 small shops, in 1898 the Drapery store was extended into the northern shop then in 1905 the old Essex House was demolished and built as the present southern end of the store.
