The Main Library building was constructed in 1835 and used as a courthouse from 1854. The library was opened in 1902 and is an example of Victorian Gothic architecture. (

While the library's collection was opened to the public in 1848, it didn't have a permanent home until this building was constructed in 1902. Today, the Main Public Library is the only historic building in South Africa built as a public library that still functions as one. (
