The Main Library building was constructed in 1835 and used as a courthouse from 1854. The library was opened in 1902 and is an example of Victorian Gothic architecture. (visit link)

While the library's collection was opened to the public in 1848, it didn't have a permanent home until this building was constructed in 1902. Today, the Main Public Library is the only historic building in South Africa built as a public library that still functions as one. (visit link)
