In the late 1980s, Canada Post began a new series of high value postage stamps featuring Canadian architecture. The first of these, issued in May of 1989, depicted the Runnymede Branch of the Toronto Public Library located in the Bloor West section of Toronto. Also issued at that same time was a $2.00 stamp featuring the McAdam train station in New Brunswick.

The Runnymede library building was designed by prominent Irish-Canadian architect John M. Lyle. Lyle had designed such Toronto buildings as the Royal Alexandra Theater and the massive Union Station and would go on to design Whitney Hall on the campus of University College in Toronto among many others.

Though working mainly in the Beaux Arts style, Lyle often incorporated English, French and Native American elements in his designs. For instance, this library building has carvings of totem poles on either side of the main entrance and the steeply sloped roof is reminiscent of French-Canadian architecture.
