The figurines at the top of the fountain are three half-naked nymphs and a child which were inspired by the classic decorations of Italian villas.
In 1859, the fountain was placed in the only open public space in Basseterre where everyone could enjoy it. Wastewater from the fountain flowed into a reservoir on land called Greatheed land (corner of Bay Road and Adlam Street).
