In 1958 director Bert Haanstra made the black and white film "Fanfare". It is a comic film about a marching band that takes part in a competition. A disagreement ensues and the marching band splits into two groups. In the end, both groups enter the competition with their own composition. The pieces of music played seem to merge into each other almost seamlessly.
All's well that ends well.
The film was largely shot in Giethoorn. This is a village in Noord Overijssel where all transport goes through canals. The photos in the gallery show the protagonist Hans Card at a jetty in front of café de Fanfare.
A current photo was taken at the same place. The jetty is still exactly in the same place in front of café de Fanfare.
Today, up to 900.000 tourists visit this Venice of the North every year.
