This sample of Sioux Quartzite is a glacial erratic, pushed down into Kansas by advancing glaciers about sixteen thousand years ago. The boulder was moved into this location in the 1990s, at about the same time that the nearby caboose was brought in. The rock is on display within a triangular sidewalk. There is no inforation sign to give any details on this sample; the sign structure nearby has no information posted on it at all at this time. In town there is a somewhat more famous example of a glacial erratic, the "Rock in the Road" on Granite Street.

Additional information is given at the page for the "Rock in the Road" Earth Cache and in this article from the Kansas Geology Survey.
Type of Display: Erratic
