Dans la forêt de Huelgoat (29), depuis un siècle, les promeneurs tentent de faire bouger la roche tremblante. Une expérience qui ne laisse pas de marbre.

« C’est comme un accouchement ! Vous poussez, vous attendez. Vous poussez, vous attendez ». Dans la forêt de Huelgoat, Pierre Pinat conseille avec humour une touriste voûtée contre la roche. Ce guide, coiffé d’un chapeau breton, mime la bonne position pour aider la jeune femme à faire se balancer cet imposant morceau de granit de 137 tonnes ! Dos à la pierre, les genoux légèrement pliés, Fabienne tente l’expérience. Cette Carcassonnaise paraît bien petite sous cette pierre de sept mètres de long, et trois mètres de haut. « Je sens que ça bouge, et pourtant je ne force pas vraiment », s’étonne la dame, enthousiaste. La roche grise se balance légèrement d’avant en arrière. Ce bloc naturel oscille sur son arête de base d’environ 90 centimètres. Une amie, subjuguée, immortalise la scène avec son smartphone. « Cela ne demande pas un énorme effort physique. Il faut surtout être bien placé, et bien positionné », explique Pierre Pinat, qui raconte avoir déjà vu une enfant de huit ans parvenir à faire bouger la fameuse roche tremblante.

Une roche épargnée par les granitiers Cette scène se répète à longueur de journée dans la forêt de Huelgoat. Cette roche en granit gris, recouverte d’un peu de mousse verte, attire ainsi la curiosité des promeneurs depuis au moins un siècle. Réussir à la faire trembler est une véritable attraction dans cette commune du Centre-Bretagne. « Elle est massive, seule, on a l’impression qu’elle va tomber, qu’elle est au bord du précipice. C’est impressionnant », décrit un jeune randonneur qui a traversé une partie du chaos de Huelgoat afin de découvrir cette roche aux allures de cachalot. Pierre Pinat, qui assure des visites guidées dans la forêt, l’éclaire de son savoir pour mieux comprendre l’histoire de cette roche, connue au-delà de nos frontières. « Avant il y avait d’autres rochers autour d’elle, car ici c’était une carrière. On a exploité le granit de Huelgoat. » Des cicatrices sur cette pierre en témoignent. « Il y a des points dessus qui montrent qu’on a essayé de la fendre. Sans doute se sont-ils rendu compte qu’elle bougeait donc ils l’ont laissé tranquille », veut croire le guide. Sur d’autres roches situées non loin de là, plusieurs anciens trous de barre à mine sont visibles. « Pour extraire le granit, on mettait dans les trous du bois sec que l’on mouillait. Ce procédé faisait craquer les rochers », explique Pierre Pinat, dont le grand-père a travaillé dans cette carrière. Ce gisement de granit a été exploité jusqu’au début du XXe siècle.

La roche tremblante participe à la légende et au côté mystique de ce site. Le chaos rocheux longe la rivière d’argent qui coule à travers cette vaste forêt chatoyante. « Le minéral se mêle au végétal, pour parfois ne faire qu’un, » constate, admiratif, Pierre Pinat. Ces blocs granitiques, dont la roche tremblante, se sont formés lentement sur des millions d’années. Il s’agissait au départ de magma ayant remonté et s’étant solidifié par refroidissement sous la croûte terrestre. Ils se sont fissurés, puis érodés et ont fini par apparaître à la surface de la terre. Une légende raconte plutôt que le géant Gargantua, pris d’une grosse colère, jeta ces blocs sur Huelgoat. Une roche en tremble encore paraît-il…

This gray granite rock, covered with a little green moss, has attracted the curiosity of walkers for at least a century. Succeeding in making it tremble is a real attraction in this town in Central Brittany. “She is massive, alone, it looks like she is going to fall, that she is on the edge of the precipice. We exploited the granite of Huelgoat. The scars on this stone bear witness to this. “There are dots on it that show we tried to split it. On other rocks not far away, several old crowbar holes are visible. “To extract the granite, we put dry wood in the holes and wet it. This process made the rocks crack,” explains Pierre Pinat, whose grandfather worked in this quarry. This granite deposit was exploited until the beginning of the 20th century.

The trembling rock participates in the legend and the mystical side of this site. The rocky chaos runs along the silver river that flows through this vast shimmering forest. “The mineral blends with the plant, sometimes becoming one,” observes, admiringly, Pierre Pinat. These granitic blocks, including the trembling rock, formed slowly over millions of years. It was initially magma that had risen and solidified by cooling under the earth's crust. They cracked, then eroded and eventually appeared on the surface of the earth. A legend tells rather that the giant Gargantua, seized with a great anger, threw these blocks on Huelgoat.
