NL Bij het gorilla-verblijf in Blijdorp viel mij iets op; er is best wel een mooie koepel in dit deel van de Riviérahal, waar het gorilla-verblijf onderdeel van is. Het ligt in de westelijke zijvleugel. De Riviérahal is een monumentaal pand

De Rivièrahal is het hoofdgebouw van Diergaarde Blijdorp en werd in 1939 gebouwd naar het ontwerp van Sybold van Ravesteyn in neobarokke/functionalistische stijl. Het tentoonstellingsgebouw is prominent gepositioneerd op de centrale, symmetrische as van de diergaarde. In de centrale hal was een wintertuin aanwezig. De zijvleugels waren bestemd voor onder meer het verblijf van reptielen, dikhuiden en apen. De naam van de hal verwijst naar de Franse Rivièra. Deze was dan ook bedoeld om bezoekers het gevoel te geven zich in een exotische omgeving te bevinden. Door het scheppen van een mediterrane, subtropische sfeer was de dierentuin ook in de winter aantrekkelijk voor publiek. Men kon er van oorsprong dineren in een chic restaurant en iets drinken in een cafetaria.

Het gebouw bestaat uit een langgerekte centrale hal met een van zuid naar noord uitwaaierende plattegrond. Aan weerszijden bezit de hal twee smallere zijbeuken met aan het zuidelijke einde ieder een cirkelvormig paviljoen. De hal wordt bekroond door een gebogen dak zonder nok. De zijbeuken worden bedekt door platte daken, gebogen daken en de paviljoens met koepeldaken. Alle daken zijn geheel rondom voorzien van een doorlopende strook bovenlichten. De dakranden zijn afgewerkt met geglazuurde tegels.

The Rivièrahal is the main building of Diergaarde Blijdorp and was built in 1939 after a design by Sybold van Ravesteyn in neo-baroque/functionalist style. The exhibition building is prominently positioned on the central, symmetrical axis of the zoo. There was a winter garden in the central hall. The side wings were intended for, among other things, the accommodation of reptiles, pachyderms and monkeys. The name of the hall refers to the French Riviera. It was therefore intended to give visitors the feeling of being in an exotic environment. By creating a Mediterranean, subtropical atmosphere, the zoo was also attractive to the public in winter. Originally one could dine in a chic restaurant and have a drink in a cafeteria.

The building consists of an elongated central hall with a floor plan fanning out from south to north. On either side, the hall has two narrower aisles, each with a circular pavilion at the southern end. The hall is topped by a curved roof without a ridge. The aisles are covered by flat roofs, curved roofs and the pavilions with domed roofs. All roofs are fitted with a continuous strip of skylights all around. The eaves are finished with glazed tiles.
