Saint Mary's Assumption Roman Catholic Church is located on Josephine Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. The church was founded by the Redemptorist order of priests, who built three churches in the area - one for Irish residents, one for the French residents, and one for the German residents, which was Saint Mary's. It was built in 1858 and is still in use as the main parish church in the area. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1974.
In 1866, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was assigned to minster at Saint Mary's. He died in 1867 and was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2000. His remains are kept in a chapel in Saint Mary's, which is also known as the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. There is a welcome center and small museum in the building next door to the church.
