Oor Wullie was created by R.D. Low, and illustrated by Dudley D. Watkins of Dundee publishers D.C. Thomson, and first appeared in their newspaper the Sunday Post on March 8th 1936. Along with the neighbouring comic strip, The Broons, Oor Wullie has continued to appear weekly in the newspaper every Sunday, being illustrated by Watkins until his death in 1969. Thereafter various illustrators have drawn the script since.

Oor Wullie is a character of schoolboy age dressed in trademark black dungarees and always began and ended the strip by sitting on a bucket. Set in a fictional town, thought to be based on Dundee, but since the 90s referred to as Auchenshoogle, Wullie is surrounded by a host of characters, including his Ma and Pa, along with Fat Bob, Soapy Soutar, Wee Eck, and P.C. Murdoch, who have all been regulars in the strip since its beginning.

This bronze statue is by Malcolm Robertson and is situated on the south side of the McManus Gallery & Museum in the city centre, not far from the D.C. Thomson offices. Wullie is perched on a wall with a peashooter in hand and his trademark bucket alongside.
