Fiorello Raffaele Enrico LaGuardia was born in New York City in 1882 to parents of Italian and Jewish ancestry. When his father joined the military, the family moved around a bit, living in a couple of western territories before moving to Trieste, his mother’s birthplace. While living in Europe, he landed a job with the US consular services and served as a translator upon his return to America in 1907.

While attending law school at NYU in New York City, he became involved in city politics. He ran for several offices and eventually got elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving six terms from a couple of districts during the late teens and throughout the decade of the 1920s. But he is mostly known for serving as mayor of New York City during the Great Depression and World War II.

During LaGuardia’s tenure as mayor, he oversaw the implementation of many of President Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, bringing substantial federal money into the city, reorganized the police, consolidated the transit system, initiated many infrastructure improvements and largely weakened the corrupt ‘Tammany Hall’ political machine that controlled the Democratic Party in New York City.

The corpulent LaGuardia was short on stature but long on energy and charisma. He is generally regarded as one of, if not the best, mayor of New York, or any American city for that matter. Besides being the subject of a Broadway musical (‘Fiorello!’) LaGuardia has several places in and around New York City named for him including, of course, LaGuardia airport.
