Shulthis Stadium, constructed in 1914, hosted many minor league baseball teams over the years. These included the Independence Producers, the Independence Yankees, and the Independence Browns. It was here that Mickey Mantle, playing for the Independence Yankees, hit his first minor-league home run, which cleared the center field wall. This was also the site of the first professionally-organized night game. The Souix City Packers used this field for spring training, and the Chicago White Sox played here.

The baseball grandstands here were legendary. Facilities under the stands included a bath house, a club room, and separate lavatories for men and women. In 1921 a Spaulding representitive called them "the finest he has ever seen." Efforts to save the historic grandstands failed, and they were carefully photographed and in 2016 were demolished and replaced by visually identical but structurally superior stands.

The facility is now multi-use and serves the Independence Bulldogs as a football, baseball, and soccer field. There are several plaques at the entrance (at the southwest corner) that tell the many stories of that historic night game and of the baseball legends who played here.
