Prieuré de Villesalem à Journet
Le prieuré a été fondé au début du XIIe siècle par Audebert de la
Trimouille qui fit don à deux ermites, Geoffray Gastinelli et Bertrand, de la
moitié du lieu, ou mas de Villesalem. Il fut cédé un peu plus tard aux
religieuses de Fontevrault. Le prieuré demeure conventuel jusqu'en 1405 et fut
gouverné par un prieur perpétuel jusqu'en 1612. A partir de cette époque et par
suite de l'introduction de la réforme de l'abbaye de Fontevrault, les prieurs
devinrent triennals. L'église fut probablement commencée vers 1150 en
commençant par l'abside sud, mais reste inachevée dans les parties hautes.

Priory of Villesalem
The priory
was founded at the beginning of the 12th century by Audebert de la Trimouille
who donated half of the place, or mas de Villesalem, to two hermits, Geoffray
Gastinelli and Bertrand. It was ceded a little later to the nuns of Fontevrault.
The priory remains conventual until 1405 and was governed by a perpetual prior
until 1612. From this time and following the introduction of the reform of the
Abbey of Fontevrault, the priors became triennial. The church was probably
started around 1150 starting with the south apse, but remains unfinished in the
upper parts.
