The former School of Mines is a stone building with a roof of iron, the southern portion was originally built as a Baptist Church in 1866 and opened as the School of Mines in January 1891. Originally there were 33 students and three subjects were taught: mine surveying and levelling; mechanical drawing; and mathematics. Over the years the number of students and subjects increased, in 1898 there were 275 students and the building was enlarged.
