[EN] Historians consider this location as one of the possible crossings of the Indre river by the Roman road leading from Argentomagus to Mediolanum.
In the Middle Ages, this Roman bridge gave access to the city from the south-east, coming from Sainte-Sévère.
Its etymology remains unclear and so does its spelling: Pontaulais, Pontaulay, Pont aux legs, Pont aux laies... A legend claims that the lays would have tried to penetrate the city by this bridge during a year of drought.
The washerwomen had access to the river by the sloping bank, still visible.
