Al Thagab Fort is a couple of quilometers away from the closest tarmac road but feels like a thousand quilometers, specially if the visitor arrives withe a normal car. A 4 wheel vehicle is advised.
It was originally builtsometime from the 17th to the 19th century and renovated a couple of times since then. By the early 20th century it was part of a network of forts designed to protect the northwest of Qatar.
There is a small hamlet next to it, named Qalaat al Thaqab. And a well, which in this lands is a precious thing and so it is very possible that the original fort was built to protect the access to the water.
Its plant is square, with 3 circular towers and a rectangular tower, a classic layout for a desert fort in the Gulf Arabic culture.
It's usually open. The gate might be closed but most likely unlocked so the visitor can enter freely and explore.
