"In 1793 Earl Gower commissioned the Coalbrookdale Company to supply castings for an iron bridge at Trentham. A bridge of single-arched design was constructed in 1794 and illustrated by Stebbing Shaw and was one of the very early iron bridges, possibly the second in the world."

The information board located adjacent to the structure gives the following information;
The Iron Bridge"Beneath the present river bridge are the footings of the world's second oldest cast iron bridge. Designed by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, construction took place in 1794 and cost £875. It was commissioned by the Earl Gower, who as owner of the Estate also controlled large parts of the Coalbrookdale Coalfield and iron works. The spirit of pioneering bridge innovation has continued at Trentham with the contemporary bridge now spanning the River Trent at the entrance to the gardens.
