The Lake is located in the gardens of the Trentham Estate on Stone Road in Trentham.

"Trentham Lake
At the heart of Trentham Gardens is the spectacular, mile-long, Capability Brown-designed Trentham Lake. Studded with small islands the Lake is alive with the sights and sounds of a wonderful array of wildlife. The circular lakeside walk takes in views of the River Trent, ancient wildflower meadows and woodlands, through the cascading weir and along atmospheric nature trails. There is so much to explore and be inspired by, including the bold and dramatic naturalistic planting design; ‘modern meadows’ by Nigel Dunnett creator of the acclaimed plantings at the Olympic Park, London. Created for successional seasonal interest and environmental suitability."

The information board located facing the lake gives the following information;
The Lake
"Granville, 2nd Lord Gower commissioned renowned English landscape architect, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown to reform Trentham Lake in 1759. The mile long lake was created by damming the original route of the River Trent. It has not always been such a natural looking lake. A pair of canals, separated by a causeway path leading from Trentham Hall, pre-dated the current lake.

The island closest to you is home to a heron colony. The lake is conserved as a natural habitat for these beautiful birds and other wildlife. You might see members of our fishing club here today. The lake has a very healthy stock of fish - the largest carp caught here was 31lb (14kg).

Did you know...
In the mid 1980s the lake emptied when deep coal mining at nearby Hem Heath colliery disturbed a natural fault in the seam of coal directly beneath it!
