EEN UNIEK MUSEUM OVER DE HEKSENVERVOLGING
Geschiedenis van een bijzonder gebouw
Bezoekers uit de hele wereld komen al zo’n honderd jaar naar de Waag in Oudewater. Ze gaan op de weegschaal staan en ontvangen een certificaat. Al in de 16e eeuw vond deze weging plaats. Toen was dat van levensbelang: mensen werden beschuldigd van toverij en belandden op de brandstapel. Keizer Karel V gaf Oudewater als enige plaats in Europa het privilege voor een eerlijk weegproces. Niemand werd er vanwege dit bijzondere recht ooit tot heks veroordeeld.

Museum
Het museum waar de geschiedenis van de heksenvervolging in de 16e en de 17e eeuw herleeft. Wanneer werd je van hekserij beschuldigd en wat gebeurde er dan met je? Wat is een heksensabbat? Waarom is de Heksenwaag in Oudewater wereldberoemd?

Als bezoeker kun je hier nog steeds de weegtest op de originele weegschaal uit 1482 ondergaan. Ben je geen heks? Ben je niet te licht? Dan ontvang je een persoonlijk bewijs – het Certificaet van Weginghe – en hoef je nergens bang voor te zijn. Met een E-card kun je daarna iedereen het goede nieuws vertellen. Voor kinderen hebben we bovendien een leuke en leerzame speurtocht. De Heksenwaag is ook uitstekend geschikt voor kinderen, familiefeestjes en zakelijke bijeenkomsten.

A UNIQUE MUSEUM ON THE WITCH PROSECUTION
History of a special building
Visitors from all over the world have been coming to the Waag in Oudewater for about a hundred years. They step on the scale and receive a certificate. This weighing already took place in the 16th century. Back then it was of vital importance: people were accused of sorcery and ended up on the stake. Emperor Charles V gave Oudewater the only place in Europe the privilege of a fair weighing process. No one was ever sentenced to be a witch because of this special right.

Museum
The museum where the history of the witch hunt in the 16th and 17th centuries comes to life. When were you accused of witchcraft and what happened to you? What is a Witches' Sabbath? Why is the Heksenwaag in Oudewater world famous?

As a visitor, you can still undergo the weighing test here on the original scale from 1482. Aren't you a witch? Aren't you too light? Then you will receive a personal proof – the Weginghe Certificate – and you need not be afraid of anything. With an E-card you can then tell everyone the good news. We also have a fun and educational treasure hunt for children. The Heksenwaag is also ideal for children, family parties and business meetings.
