In 1851 when New South Wales and Victoria became separate colonies of England, the border line was established as the southern bank of the Murray River. This allowed New South Wales to impose a tax on goods using the river as a means of transport.

When Australia became a federated nation in 1901, the border remained.

This old bridge was the crossing between the town of Corowa in New South Wales and the smaller town of Waganuyah. It is now more common for traffic to use the larger bridge, several kilometers upstream.

You are crossing on the John Ford Bridge.
