"Ancienne place forte de la ville, pour son commerce notamment, la halle au Beurre, d’architecture typiquement normande a été construite en lieu et place d’un ancien bailliage, puis d’un ancien prétoire qui date du 16e siècle dont il reste encore quelques vestiges.

Sous le hall d’entrée, sur le mur de droite, portant des inscriptions en vieux français, la pierre scellée est celle qui ornait le fronton du prétoire.

L’intérieur qui, autrefois, était la salle d’audience, montre l’effigie de deux lions et des inscriptions latines tirées de l’Ancien Testament.

Son sous-sol abrite deux geôles, avec leurs anneaux d’attache scellés, et les murs portent encore quelques « témoignages » gravés de détenus, agrémentées de latrines, qui ont été sauvegardées et dont on aperçoit l’entrée à la droite de la halle.

La Halle au beurre a été transformée, depuis, et accueille désormais des spectacles et d’autres manifestations culturelles."
