Wayne County is named for Anthony Wayne, who was a general in the American Revolutionary War, and who lived from 1745 to 1796.

A little history about the six courthouses that have been here...(from courthouses.co)
"The county was created in 1800 and Monticello was selected as the county seat. The first court met at the home of Henry Garner in 1801. The first courthouse was a log structure erected in the center of the public square in 1801. The second courthouse was a two story stone structure built sometime before 1825. The third courthouse was a two story brick structure built in 1825 on the courthouse square. An annex was built in 1840 for the clerk’s office. In 1866, the county moved to a temporary building. In 1878, the fourth courthouse was designed by Thomas Thurmond Milburn and built by T T Milburn at Main Street and Michigan Street, one block east of the original site. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1898. The fifth courthouse was a two story structure designed by Frank Pierce Milburn and constructed by T T Milburn. The courthouse was demolished and the sixth and present courthouse was constructed in 1949 to 1950."

A description of the current courthouse...(from courthouses.co)
"The building faces southeast and is a two story concrete, steel and red colored brick structure. The building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Monticello. The main entrance at the northeast corner is framed with gray colored stone with a double window on the second story. Vertical bands of stone run intermittently along the sides of the building. The roof line is flat."
