The Cuban Friendship Urn originally stood in Cuba, honoring the deaths of those on the USS Maine prior to the Spanish-American War. During a hurricane in 1926 knocked it down and in 1928 it was presented to President Calvin Coolidge by Cuban President Gerardo Machado. It stood outside of the Cuban Embassy for years but then around 1959-62 it was removed, disappeared, and neglected (Due to Fidel Castro coming into power). In 1998 it was placed in the present location.

Monument Text:

—Gerardo Machado

Translation:
The memory of the “Maine” will last forever through the centuries [as will] the bonds of friendship between the homeland of Cuba and the homeland of the United States of North America. —Gerardo Machado

Translation:
