This 41,000 acre refuge is one of the largest refuges in the US state of Louisiana. Multiple species of birds can be spotted within the refuge boundaries, including the bald eagle. Visitors to the refuge can fish along the banks of the Ouachita River, hike and explore 4x4 ATV trails, go birding, and enjoy ample opportunities for wildlife photography.
There are no staffed visitor services within the refuge boundaries. Refuge roads are made of crushed rock and gravel. Be prepared to be self-sufficient: cell phone reception is sparse and help could take some time to get to you. The best entrance for access to the river is going to be from the town of Marion, Louisiana. Take Louisiana Highway 827 east until it turns into Dean Church Road, then follow to Alabama Landing Rd and turn left. Follow to Public Landing Rd and turn right.
