In 1940 the Windsor Dam was built along the Swift River to create the Quabbin Reservoir. The towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott were previously evacuated, disestablished by Massachusetts, and then flooded due to the rising waters of the Swift River.
The Whitaker-Cleary House was built by William Whitaker in 1816. The Clary family then purchased the house. When the Massachusetts District Commission, which managed the Quabbin Watershed, decided not to destroy all the buildings in the watershed, the Swift River Historical Society, which represents the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott, purchased the Whitaker-Clary House in 1961 for $1.00.
The society made the Whitaker-Clary House its headquarters and created the Swift River Historical Society Museum on the grounds. The museum's collection was donated from the flooded towns within the Swift River Valley.
