Renaissance Revival style South Main Street School was built in 1895 to a symmetrical design by architect Francis R. Richmond. The brick building with brownstone trim was built to serve as an elementary school for students living in the South End neighborhood of Springfield. The elementary school closed in the mid- 1970s and was then used for special education classes. It fully closed in 1982. It was then converted into an apartment building: (

The two story high South Main Street School has a set of steps leading up to three brick and brownstone arches and three recessed entrances.
on the lower level there are six rectangular windows on each side of the entrances. Five bays project from each side of the building with rectangular windows at the lower level. The upper level has nine arched windows in the center and five rectangular windows on the projecting sides.
The ends of the building have nine rectangular windows on both the lower and upper levels. The side facing main street has the inscription: SOUTH MAIN STREET SCHOOL between the first and second levels.
The building has a hip roof and a brick frieze. Over the three entrance bays a pediment with a fan light rises from the roof. A brick railing tops the five bay wide projecting ends of the building.
