The Tibbits Opera House opened in 1882 at 14 S Hanchett St, Coldwater, MI 49036. It was designed by architect Mortimer Smith in the Second Empire style, he incorporated an inset near the roof line of the peak in front of the building and placed a bust of the bard William Shakespeare there. From the Coldwater Republican of September 19, 1882:
"The tip of the dome itself towered 76 feet (23 m) above the pavement below. At the base of the cupola, one could behold an elegant bronze bust of Shakespeare, and below this still, inscribed in an arch above the front window was "Tibbits Opera-House, 1882", in gold leaf."
The bust was removed when the opera house was repurposed as a movie theatre in the 20th Century, it has been returned to the cupola now that the building is being restored to its original purpose.
