The engraved stone says:
"Little Comfort Historical Park
"First Sawmill 1693 - Canal 1745 - Cannon Foundry 1776
"Whitman Historical Commission 1976"
The canal that is mentioned here starts a few feet from this stone and is a combined canal - tunnel that runs to another brook about 1/10 mile east. This was probably to provide more water power to mills on the other brook. The cannon foundry, the first in the U.S., was run by Aaron Hobart, who was also running the first bell foundry in the U.S.
This stone is located on Pond Street, which runs just west of the railroad tracks, at a point where there is a gate across the street, and a pull-off to the left.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
