Pynchon Plaza was built in 1976 as a United States Bicentennial project. The goal was to construct a stairway with 78 steps connecting the lower business, legal and entertainment downtown area west of Dwight Street to the upper religious, arts, and cultural Quadrangle-Mattoon District east of Chestnut Street. There is also an elevator which I've never actually observed working. In 2022 the park was restored. The lower plaza and the stairway was decorated with sculptures by invited artists.
