Marsaxlokk fishing village is the largest fishing harbour in Malta. Around 70 percent of Malta's fishing fleet is based in Marsaxlokk. Marsaxlokk was already used as a port by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and also has the remains of a Roman port.
The fishing boats are a mix of luzzus (traditional fishing boats in bright colors) and larger fishing vessels. There are special colors on the fishing boats (luzzus) in Malta. A blue, a terracotta red and a yellow interspersed with stripes of white and green. All natural colors reminiscent of the land, the sea, the sun and the green fields. In addition to the colors, there are two eyes in the bow. It is the eye of Osiris that protects against evil spirits.
Many different fish are caught, such as tuna, squid, Great Barracuda and Amberjack.
All week the fishermen sell their catch at the fish market in Marsa. From there, fishmongers and restaurant owners gather in the early hours of the morning to buy fish. But on Sundays, fish is sold directly to consumers by the fishermen from stalls at Marsaxlokk market.
