The name of the town Klimkovice is likely derived from the founder of the original settlement with a fortress, Klement, also known as Klimek. Klimkovice is reportedly first mentioned in 1373, but this information cannot be verified today. The first definite mention comes from 1416 when Beneš II of Kravare granted the town the right of odúmrti (a feudal right allowing the town to inherit property). The town became the seat of an independent estate under Tasa of Bítov in 1451. Hynek II of Bruntál from Vrbno freed the town from serfdom in 1564 and replaced it with monetary payments, and in the same year, he allowed the construction of a brewery in the town square. Ondrej Bzenec of Markvartice built a Renaissance castle and the Church of St. Catherine in the town in 1578-1579. The town was owned the longest by the Vlcek (Wilczek) family from Dobrá Zemice from 1600 to 1848. In 1766, the townspeople participated in the large serfdom uprising in Silesia. Around the same time, the miller Jan Augustin from Klimkovice officially reported to the mining office in Kutná Hora the existence and properties of coal in the Ostrava region for the first time. The town became the seat of a judicial district and held this status from 1850 to 1938.

After the signing of the Munich Agreement, Klimkovice was occupied by Nazi Germany on October 9, 1938, and was incorporated into the so-called Sudeten German territories (Sudetendeutsche Gebiete). On May 1, 1939, it was incorporated into the Reichsgau Sudetenland and, within it, belonged to the Opava administrative district. At the end of World War II, as part of the Ostrava Operation, the Red Army launched an attack on the town on Thursday, April 26, 1945, and finally liberated it on May 1st.

Sudetonemeckých území (Sudetendeutsche Gebiete). 1. kvetna 1939 pak byly zacleneny do ríšské župy Sudetenland a v jejím rámci patrily do vládního obvodu Opava.
