Built in 1936 (per the plaque), this stairway connect Martin Luther King Boulevard (formerly Lawrence Street) with Union Street. It was a WPA project to connect Lawrence Street and Union Street. It is approximately 225 feet long, ascending 60 feet. Each step is about 6 inches high, so there are about 120 steps and several ramps.
