De routes zijn gelegen op de Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Na de Veluwe is de Heuvelrug het grootste bosgebied van Nederland. De vele heuvels zijn ontstaan in de een na laatste ijstijd, meer dan 130.000 jaar geleden.
Het ijs stuwde zand en stenen op tot een langgerekte stuwwal van het Gooimeer bij Huizen tot de Grebbeberg bij Rhenen.
De bossen zijn grotendeels van latere tijd. In de vroege middeleeuwen maakten de oorspronkelijke bossen plaats voor landbouw en vooral veeteelt. De heidevelden (bijvoorbeeld het Leersumse veld) en de stuifzanden (zoals de Soesterduinen) herinneren nog aan die tijd. Pas in de 19e en 20e eeuw kwam de grootschalige herbebossing op gang. In eerste instantie voor de houtproductie. Tegenwoordig komt de variatie in bomen, struiken en planten terug die hoort bij een gezond bos.
Het gebied staat bekend om zijn enorme hoeveelheid broedende vogelsoorten. In het terrein tref je grote hoogteverschillen aan van 8 t/m 69 meter boven NAP.
Aard van de route
De route Amerongen ligt in het deel dat van oorsprong 2 landgoederen waren: het Amerongse bos en het Zuilensteinse bos. De route loopt afwisselend over vlakke en heuvelachtige delen van de Utrechtse Heuvelrug. De route is een afwisselende route met veel singletracks, brede lange klimmen en leuke uitdagende afdalingen.
Deze route kan gecombineerd worden met de routes in Rhenen, Kwintelooijen en Leersum.

Harry Slinger afdaling
Het is NIET toegestaan om bij de Harry Slinger afdaling weer naar boven te rijden, ook niet via een eigen bedachte route. Er mag niet gefietst worden buiten de aangegeven routes (fietspaden en MTB routes). Dit geldt voor het gehele Nationaal park Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

De Samenwerking MTB Utrechtse Heuvelrug is ontstaan vanuit de wens om de tegenstellingen tussen terreineigenaren, natuurbeheerders en mountainbikers te overbruggen. De mountainbikers willen graag de ruimte om hun sport te kunnen beoefenen.

The routes are located on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. After the Veluwe, the Heuvelrug is the largest forest area in the Netherlands. The many hills were created in the penultimate ice age, more than 130,000 years ago.
The ice pushed up sand and stones into an elongated lateral moraine from the Gooimeer near Huizen to the Grebbeberg near Rhenen.
The forests are largely of later times. In the early Middle Ages, the original forests gave way to agriculture and especially cattle breeding. The heaths (such as the Leersum field) and the shifting sands (such as the Soesterduinen) are still reminders of that time. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that large-scale reforestation started. Initially for wood production. Nowadays, the variation in trees, shrubs and plants that belongs to a healthy forest returns.
The area is known for its huge amount of breeding bird species. In the terrain you will find large differences in height from 8 to 69 meters above NAP.
Nature of the route
The Amerongen route is located in the part that was originally 2 estates: the Amerongse bos and the Zuilensteinse bos. The route alternates between flat and hilly parts of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The route is a varied route with many single tracks, wide long climbs and fun challenging descents.
This route can be combined with the routes in Rhenen, Kwintelooijen and Leersum.

Harry Slinger descent
It is NOT allowed to drive back up the Harry Slinger descent, not even via your own devised route. Cycling is not allowed outside the indicated routes (bicycle paths and MTB routes). This applies to the entire Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park.

The Collaboration MTB Utrechtse Heuvelrug arose from the desire to bridge the differences between terrain owners, nature managers and mountain bikers. The mountain bikers want the space to practice their sport.
