FR La Lawe est une rivière française de la région Hauts-de-France, un affluent de la Lys et un sous-affluent donc de l'Escaut.

Géographie

Elle prend sa source à Rocourt en l'Eau, hameau de Magnicourt-en-Comté (Pas-de-Calais), passant par La Comté, Beugin, Houdain, Bruay-la-Buissière, Fouquereuil, Béthune, Essars, Locon, La Couture, Vieille-Chapelle, Lestrem, elle se jette dans la Lys, sur sa rive droite, au niveau de La Gorgue après un parcours de 41,1 kilomètres1.

Son nom pourrait provenir de la racine hydronymique prélatine Ava. La Lawe s'est en effet appelée L'Awe et même l'Awiette.

La Lawe fut classée navigable jusqu'après la seconde Guerre mondiale, mais elle est toujours restée à un stade archaïque de canalisation avec deux écluses, deux pertuis et une paléo-écluse, cette dernière se trouvant tout près de son confluent avec la Lys, à la Gorgue, et parfaitement visible. La présence de cet ouvrage archaïque très bien conservé fait de la Lawe une rivière particulièrement intéressante pour les archéologues nauticiens.

Vrais et faux affluents

La Lawe a des affluents : la Brette, la Bajuelle, la Biette, la Blanche, le Turbeauté, le Courant de la Goutte, le Fossé des Barizeaux et la Loisne.

La Blanche n'est pas un affluent mais la séparation de la rivière en deux cours d'eau, après le moulin de Gosnay. Ce cours d'eau creusé de main d'homme en grande partie servait à l'alimentation en eau des fortifications de Béthune, jusqu'à la fin du XIXe siècle.

- La Blanche rejoint actuellement la Lawe à hauteur du moulin d'Annezin. Après la destruction des fortifications de Béthune, elle faisait encore une incursion dans cette ville, en décrivant une large boucle et en ramassant au passage durant des années les déchets des abattoirs de Béthune. Après la fermeture des abattoirs, les terrains qu'elle traversait en aval de la ville ont été aménagés. Le cours de la rivière a été détourné pour rejoindre plus rapidement la Brette.

- Le Turbeauté est un cours d'eau qui se forme dans le marais des communes d'Annezin et de Fouquereuil. Il est alimenté en eau par les puits artésiens du marais. Le Turbeauté rejoint la Lawe après un parcours d'environ 2 km. Au XVIIIe siècle, il avait un cours plus long et plus libre. Il assurait la protection du château des seigneurs d'Annezin et ne rejoignait la Lawe qu'après plusieurs kilomètres, vers le village de Locon. Mais au XIXe siècle, le propriétaire du château, M. Bartier, détourna le cours d'eau dans le lit qu'il occupe aujourd'hui.

Géography

Its name could come from the prelatin hydronymic root Ava. La Lawe was indeed called L'Awe and even l'Awiette.

The Lawe was classified as navigable until after the Second World War, but it always remained at an archaic stage of canalization with two locks, two sluices and a paleo-lock, the latter being very close to its confluence with the Lys, at the Gorgue, and perfectly visible. The presence of this very well-preserved archaic structure makes the Lawe a particularly interesting river for nautical archaeologists.

True and false tributaries

The Lawe has tributaries: the Brette, the Bajuelle, the Biette, the Blanche, the Turbeauté, the Courant de la Goutte, the Fossé des Barizeaux and the Loisne.

- The Blanche is not a tributary but the separation of the river into two streams, after the Gosnay mill. This watercourse, largely dug by human hands, was used to supply water to the fortifications of Béthune until the end of the 19th century.

- The Blanche currently joins the Lawe at the Annezin mill. After the destruction of the fortifications of Béthune, it made another incursion into this city, describing a wide loop and picking up waste from the slaughterhouses of Béthune along the way. After the slaughterhouses closed, the land it crossed downstream of the city was developed. The course of the river has been diverted to reach the Brette more quickly.

- The Turbeauté is a watercourse which forms in the marshes of the municipalities of Annezin and Fouquereuil. It is supplied with water by the artesian wells of the marsh. The Turbeauté joins the Lawe after a course of about 2 km. In the 18th century it had a longer and freer course. It ensured the protection of the castle of the lords of Annezin and joined the Lawe only after several kilometers, towards the village of Locon. But in the 19th century, the owner of the castle, Mr. Bartier, diverted the watercourse into the bed it occupies today.
