The brick lined continuous shaft kiln was built in 1963. Limestone was tipped into a crusher and different sizes screened and fed by conveyor belt into stock piles, the crushed stone together with coke was fed by belt to the top of the burn tower. The kiln burnt 7 days a week, during the day the mixed coke and rock would be fed into the kiln at regular intervals. Just before knock-off time the kin was filled and airflow adjusted to burn all night, in the morning the lime was drawn off and the process continued.
The kiln was capable of burning lime to any quality for different uses, limestone from certain areas burned to a different quality so that when a special high quality was ordered the rock had to come from a certain area.
The kiln closed in 1973 and the crusher, conveyor belt and other items were sold, the kiln remained due to protests by local fishermen who wanted it to remain as it provided a landmark.
