The weather station was placed on Martin Bay on the northern tip of Labrador by the crew of submarine U-537 in the fall of 1943. #26 was the 6th of 23 such stations intended for use throughout the seacoast, but is the only one known to have been installed in North America. The station, callsign Kurt 26 began operations by the fall of 1943.
It consisted of an automatic radio transmitter, wind, pressure and temperature measuring system. However, the transmitter failed shortly after and the site remained undiscovered until 1977. The station is mostly intact, with the batteries being removed. Some original instruments have also been replaced due to unrecoverable deterioration.
