Abbott was named for its first Postmaster, Horace C. Abbott. The town was located west of the cemetery, where C-48 crosses Highway 412. Abbott Station served the El Paso & Southwest Railroad that hauled coal from Dawson to Tucumcari. However, most of the homesteaders here could not stay on this dry and parched land long enough to fulfill their claim, and all that remains of the town is this cemetery. The cemetery is still active, with burials in the last decade.
