The sign says, "The desert valley far below you has been covered by water many times. Periodic flooding by the Colorado River left huge lakes that slowly evaporated. The last natural lake, Lake Cahuilla, dried up about three hundred years ago. Also, seawater has invaded the area once or twice from the Gulf of California. Sediment laid down in the valley by wind and water is now more than two miles thick, and forms some of the richest farm land in the world."
