At the beginning of the twentieth century the only way to travel between the agricultural areas of the Salt River Valley and the copper mining communities of central Arizona was horseback. In 1919 the Arizona Highway Department began constructing a two lane highway between Superior and Miami. The route was complete in 1922 and eventually became part of the national highway system. One of the biggest obstacles to overcome was the grade through Devils Canyon. That canyon, well named, is very steep and rugged. The road bed turned and twisted up one side of the canyon until it came to a point where exiting the canyon was advisable. The Devils Canyon Bridge was constructed to carry the road bed across the creek from where it travelled up and out of the canyon. The bridge is a concrete, filled spandrel arch bridge with a medium rise. The bridge was orphaned in 1941 when the road was straightened. The bridge is still in good shape and the roadway is walkable.
