TEXT ON THE HISTORICAL MARKER
Military Occupation-The Independent Junior Fire Company was formed in 1842. Their firehouse was constructed in 1852 and altered in 1881. During the Civil War, the Juniors' firehouse was used by the U.S. Army for various purposes and served as a field hospital to treat the wounded. The Juniors remained at this location until November 21, 1993 when the Company was moved to its new home on Eastern Boulevard.
