[EN] “On the balcony of the first floor of the Plus Ultra building there is a carillon that, in addition to striking the hours at specific moments of the day, presents a small show of mobile figures, the only one in Spain at the time of its inauguration. The idea arose from the insurance company as a tribute to the city of Madrid. Its cost is an absolute secret.
The architects José Ignacio Cortés, Luis del Rey and Pedro Gáligo directed the conditioning works on the second floor of the building to support the 3000 kg weight of machinery and figures. It was inaugurated on December 20, 1993 by the Infanta Pilar de Borbón. The Royal Bell Foundry in Eijsbouts in the Netherlands, the largest manufacturer of bells and chimes for 135 years, spent six months producing it. His computer has the capacity to interpret up to a total of five hundred different melodies selected by music critic Andrés Ruiz Tarazona. The music comes from eighteen red bronze chimes of different sizes installed on either side of the clock face. It is possible to add new melodies to the computer whose score is composed by a Dutch chime master. The carillon plays The Madrid anthem, La Marseillaise, the Radetzky March, Libiamo ne' lieti calici from La Traviata, Madrid's Ritirata and Boccherini's minuet, among many others. With the Christmas holidays the list is extended to universal carols such as White Christmas.
The figures were designed by Antonio Mingote, are one meter forty tall and are dressed in Goyesque Madrid. They were first modeled in clay and later in synthetic resin by the Dutch sculptor Nicolás Van Ronkenstein. Each of the five figures performs a different movement: the bullfighter Pedro Romero tempers his crutch before the charge of an imaginary bull, a manola salutes with his fan, Carlos III of Spain - the "king mayor" of Madrid - shakes his head, the Duchess of Alba will greet with a handkerchief and the painter Francisco de Goya draws in the air with a brush.
Its operating hours are every day at 12, 15, 18 and 20 hours, on December 24 and 31 also at 24 hours. During daylight hours it plays a short melody before the hour.”
