Lecompton, Kansas is famous for being designated the first Territorial Capital of Kansas in 1855. However its status as the Territorial Capital was short-lived, and not simply because the money ran out with a capital building less than one-quarter finished.
When Kansas was admitted to the Union in 1861, the Kansas state capital was established at Topeka and everyone left Lecompton.
In 1882, founders of Lane University used some of the leftover Territorial Capitol Building construction materials and the foundation of that building in a new building that became the Lane University Main Building.
Two handsome stone hitching posts were placed at the entrance to the main building to accommodate those who needed to tie up their horses during visits to the Main Building.
These hitching posts are still part of this building today.
