This steam engine was built around 1930 by Flottmann-Werke GmbH in Herne, NRW, Germany and was in service at the Arnold metal goods factory (the buildings behind the engine). The Arnold company primarily produced hospital beds.

A steam engine uses steam to generate energy and electricity. Their invention paved the way for industrialization as the steam engine could power many machines. Their efficiency was higher than that of pure muscle power or other energy sources such as water or windmills.
