The Fountain of the Washhouse of the Seult of Ornans

From inside the wash house, through the arches, you can see the bell tower of the Saint-Laurent church in Ornans. A first building of which only the base of the bell tower remains was erected in the 12th century. Several times burned and devastated, it was rebuilt in the 16th century and the work was entrusted to the master mason Braschotte of Ornans. The Granvelle family allowed the construction of the bell tower in 1564. The building was consecrated in 1572. In 1735, the bell tower was raised and topped with an imperial roof. During the 19th century, the choir was reworked and the floor was raised by 150 cm.

The fountain and the wash house date from the 19th century. The latter is leaning against a wall and covered with a roof of mechanical tiles resting on eight pillars. In front of the large semicircular basin, formerly used as a drinking trough, is surmounted by a bollard on which rests a cast iron statue of Saint Vernier. This Saint has become the most venerated winegrower saint in the region. He lived in the 13th century in the Rhineland and was martyred by three wretches who, when he returned from communion, wanted to make him spit out his host, but as this proved impossible, they opened his veins. His cult spread to Franche Comté, Burgundy and Auvergne. He is also known as Saint-Verny, Garnier, Werner.
