In an attempt to link the copper rich mining towns or north central Arizona with the farming communities of the Salt River Valley a highway was constructed through Elm canyon. From the top of that canyon, it dropped over and into Devil's canyon, which earned its name. The highway reputedly cost a million dollars per mile and was constructed in 1919. This concrete bridge is the first bridge heading north out of Superior. It is a Luten Arch Bridge and just barely two lanes wide. The old alignment was replaced with a new highway in 1952 and the old bridge was taken out of service at that time. The land in the canyon is owned by a copper mining company and they have worked with the town of Superior to create a hiking trail along the old alignment. Access is restricted to hiking and biking. The original pavement is still in place and in good condition overall.
