In earlier centuries, young single farmhands traveled around the hamlets of Velden on Gekke Maandag from café to café and then to café's in the village. Originally it is a party of the young people, in response to the guild festival of the guild founded in 1439. This party used to be on January 20 (St. Sebastian's Day). Young people were not allowed to attend. The first Monday after the guild party was therefore Mad Monday. While celebrating this special day, the young people dressed up as the elderly, blackened their faces with charcoal and wore their coats inside out (binneste fine) as a playful symbol of their protest. Now Mad Monday is the first Monday after January 23.
